Dr. Jancie Philippus

Dr. Jancie Philippus serves as the Public
Engagement Coordinator for the School of Music. In this
capacity, she facilitates engagement programs such as Illinois
Summer Youth Music, Make More Music!, and Music Mentors,
oversees the school’s social media, and assists with admission
and recruiting events. An in-demand horn performer and
pedagogue in the Central Illinois area, she serves as Principal
horn of the Urbana Pops Orchestra, fourth
horn of the Lafayette, Champaign-Urbana, and Danville
Symphonies, and is second horn with the Sinfonia da Camera.
She has performed with the Illinois, Peoria, Round Rock, and
Kalamazoo Symphonies, and the Heartland, Brevard Music
Center, and Blue Lake Festival Orchestras.
Dr. Philippus’ doctoral thesis, Recent Works for Horn by Portuguese Composers: An Annotated Guide, explores over 50 contemporary horn works by little-known Portuguese composers. She was awarded a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship through the Center for Global Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to further her research in this area. In January 2015, Dr. Philippus traveled to Porto, Portugal to conduct interviews with Portuguese composers and was awarded a Dissertation Travel Grant to conduct additional research in Lisbon, Portugal the following year.
Dr. Philippus has taught horn students of all ages and ability and served as horn faculty for the Illinois Summer Youth Music program and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. She taught the Horn Methods class and undergraduate horn lessons at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Western Michigan University. Dr. Philippus maintains a private horn studio in Urbana, IL. Her students have earned positions in the Illinois Music Educators Association ensembles, local youth orchestras, and participated in summer music programs all over the county.
Dr. Philippus is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the International Women in Brass Conference, and the International Horn Society. Her primary teachers include Patrick Hughes, Richard Deane, Dr. Lin Foulk, and Bernhard Scully. She has also worked with Gail Williams, Douglas Hill, Roger Kaza, Jeffrey Agrell, and David Johnson.
